Electricity (?) blackout

It was a lovely Monday noon, when out of the blue, computers stopped working, lights illuminating school hallways flickered and were swallowed by darkness, cash became the only available method of payment in many establishments, traffic lights were off, subway stations were overwhelmed, and trains came to a halt in the middle of nowhere.

What was happening?

Apparently the whole Spain, Portugal and south France were left without power. Some suggested it was a “rare atmospheric phenomenon”, others stood by a cyber-attack.

We had no idea till people around us started whispering and running from one place to another. On our way home, we stopped at Mercadona to buy some groceries, since we didn’t know how long the blackout would last. Lucky for us, the shop closed right after we paid. People on the streets were stopping us, asking what mobile company we have, confused we could call.

Although the electricity outage didn’t discontinue water intake, we filled every cup, bowl and a pan we had, just in case. A while later, we realized our apartment is more dark than light, so long story short we headed back to school thinking they had a working flashlight to borrow. We were told that they don’t and we could visit the local Chinese shop to purchase new ones. We returned home and texted the owner of our current estate, who eventually brought us two funccioning linternas.

Smiling, we went for a peaceful walk along the river, listening to the chirping of birds, admiring the green, and enjoyed that warm and sunny day in general.

To be totally honest, surprise wasn’t one of the emotions occupying our nervous system. One week here was enough to make us accept basically anything Spain brings to our front door. However, we’d be way more grateful for flowers…
